2011
I was thinking about how, when I was a kid in the 1960s, giving valentines in school was a thing. You gave them to your friends, but also, basically to everyone. Lurid (and, in some cases, weirdly suggestive) paper valentines were mass-produced, bought, and handed out to all and sundry.

2011 Valentines

So I thought it would be nice, instead of giving one Valentine to my friends, I would send several so they could give some away. I decided to make a modular heart, where I could mix the various pieces up, so that each heart was similar, but not the same, resulting in individual valentines but similar enough that one could gladly give some away.

As it turned out, I discovered that most people kept them all.
